These eight different side dishes and sauces are easy to make and pair perfectly with fresh salmon patties. Salmon patties are great as an appetizer or as a main dish.
These side dishes are convenient for busy weeknights when you’re looking for a tasty recipe to get on the table quickly. Or, combine a few of the side dishes, and you’ve got yourself a flavourful meal to enjoy!
Salmon patties, also known as salmon cakes, are flaky and tender. They are often pan-fried with a little bit of olive oil so that the outside is crispy and the inside is soft and full of flavour. Salmon patties are a great way to use any leftover salmon, or you can use fresh salmon for the recipe.
I would recommend using fresh cooked salmon. The fresh flavour and big pieces of flaked salmon make all the difference. But, if you’re looking to save time, you can use well-drained canned salmon instead of fresh salmon fillets.
Salmon patties are made primarily with cooked salmon fillet or canned salmon, olive oil, garlic powder, bread crumbs, grated white onions, eggs, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, and fresh herbs like parsley or dill. The salmon mixture is then formed into small flattened circles and pan-fried on medium-high heat until golden brown and cooked through.
Salmon is a great source of protein and has numerous health benefits because it’s one of the best sources of essential omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, salmon is also packed with Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, and calcium.
8 BEST SIDE DISHES FOR SALMON PATTIES
1. Tzatziki Sauce
The creamy and garlicky flavour of tzatziki goes perfectly with the tender texture of salmon patties. Try serving salmon patties with tzatziki instead of tarter sauce for another creamy dip option. Tzatziki is made with strained full-fat Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, fresh dill, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice.
Homemade tzatziki is an easy sauce to make, and it goes great with salmon and grilled meat like pork souvlaki. Another option is to spread tzatziki onto a piece of warm pita bread and top with leftover salmon patties to enjoy as a wrap.
2. Creamy Mayo Dill Sauce
Creamy mayo dill sauce is made primarily with white onions, whipping cream, dill, extra virgin olive oil, mayo, white wine, garlic, butter, capers, and fresh lemon zest.
This sauce will elevate the flavour of any leftover salmon patties! It’s so good that you’ll want to put it on everything! You can easily make creamy mayo dill sauce on your stovetop in a small saucepan.
3. Roasted Tiny Lemon Potatoes
This is my all-time favourite side dish! Tiny potatoes take just over 30 minutes to bake in the oven. So if you’re making salmon patties on the stove, you’ve got the oven free to make these delicious Greek lemon tiny potatoes.
Sprinkle the potatoes with fresh herbs and crumbled feta cheese. It’s a super easy recipe, and try making it with the creamy mustard sauce, which is so good with salmon.
4. Pita Bread
You’ll only need a few basic ingredients and less than 5 minutes of cooking time to make delicious homemade pita bread. For some extra flavour, sprinkle the fried pita bread with extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano, and sea salt flakes.
The end result is doughy and crispy homemade pita bread that is the perfect side for salmon patties. You can place salmon patties inside the pita bread, top with tzatziki, and make a delicious wrap for lunch! Pita bread is also a great alternative to burger buns.
Or, you could slice the pita bread into four triangles and serve it on the side with the salmon patties.
5. Greek Salad
Greek salad can be prepared in under five minutes and is the perfect side for salmon if you’re looking for a fresh, healthy, and easy meal to prepare.
The simple ingredients for a Greek salad are diced cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, green peppers, kalamata olives, and crumbled feta cheese.
Combine the salad with lemon juice, oil, and oregano dressing for a simple salad but a refreshing side dish for salmon patties. Plus, if you’re looking for a low-carb meal, then this is a great side dish for you!
6. Greek Nacho Fries
Greek nacho fries are homemade crispy baked fries topped with fresh diced tomatoes, satuéed red onions, creamy tzatziki, kalamata olives, and dried oregano.
The flavours from Greek fries go well with salmon patties. If you’re going to transform the salmon patties into salmon burgers, then make Greek fries to elevate your dinner-time meal for a Greek spin on burgers and fries.
7. Roasted Mixed Vegetables and Potatoes
Peel and slice eggplant, bell peppers, red onion, and potatoes and toss them with olive oil, seasoning salt, and pepper. Place the vegetables on a baking sheet and bake them in the oven for about 30 minutes.
You can choose any vegetables that you like the most! Roasting vegetables enhances the flavour of vegetables, and the soft texture goes great with salmon for a light meal.
Another idea is to serve your salmon patties with roasted vegetables, sliced pita bread, and tzatziki dip for a delicious full dinner meal.
8. Lemon Greek Rice Or White Rice
Rice is so simple and one of my favourites sides for salmon. You can easily make a rice bowl with leftover salmon patties and use whichever type of rice you like the most.
Pour the creamy mayo dill sauce over the rice and salmon patties. Serve with a fresh lemon wedge.
The rice soaks up all of the delicious sauce, and the flaky and crispy salmon patties are the perfect focal point of the meal. The creamy mayo dill sauce and salmon patties are full of flavour, so a simple white rice side dish should not be overlooked.
